Founding Full-Stack Engineer

Engineering · Full-time · Founding role · San Francisco, CA (onsite)

About Lane

Lane Technologies, Inc. ("Lane") is building the financial infrastructure for the agentic web. Our mission is to turn intent into action, which means giving AI agents a dependable way to reach businesses, to prove who they are acting on behalf of, and to pay for what they transact. The first iteration of the internet was built for eyes and fingers; it was a library of documents. The second was built for apps; it was a collection of walled gardens. We are building the third, a web built for agents. We are a small team, and the people who join us early take real ownership of the systems our products depend on.

The Role

We are hiring a founding Full-Stack Engineer to help build Lane's products end-to-end. In this role, you will work across the stack, from the interfaces our merchants and developers use to the services and data behind them, with a particular focus on our Agent Wallet and Agent Checkout products. You will also work alongside us on the AI and agent features that sit at the center of what Lane does.

This is a hands-on and high-agency position on a small team. You will take features from idea to production, make the design decisions along the way, and operate what you ship. Because our products move money and assert identity on behalf of real people, correctness and reliability matter throughout the stack, not only at the infrastructure layer. You will work directly with the founding team and will have meaningful latitude to shape both the product and how we build it.

Compensation is a competitive salary and meaningful early equity; details discussed during the process.

What You'll Work On

Product Development Across the Stack

Frontend and backend engineering. You will design and build features end-to-end, from user-facing interfaces for merchants and developers through to the services, APIs, and data models that support them. We expect you to be comfortable moving between the front end and the back end, and to choose the right place in the stack to solve a given problem.

Agent Wallet and Agent Checkout

Product and applications engineering. You will build and improve the experiences and services behind our two core products. Agent Wallet issues programmable, scope-limited payment credentials tied to a user's existing card, and Agent Checkout allows agents to complete real transactions across a range of commerce protocols and payment providers. You will help turn these capabilities into reliable, well-designed product surfaces.

APIs and Integrations

Backend engineering, developer experience. Lane is used through its APIs, so the quality of those interfaces matters a great deal. You will design and maintain the APIs and integrations that merchants, developers, and partners build on, with attention to clarity, stability, and good documentation. The goal is to keep the external surface simple while we absorb the underlying complexity.

AI and Agent Features

Applied AI, software engineering. You will work on the parts of our products that rely on large language models and agents, including the tooling and guardrails that keep them dependable. You do not need to be a machine learning researcher, but you should be comfortable building software around AI systems and reasoning about how they behave and where they fail.

Reliability and Day-to-Day Operations

Full-stack engineering, operations. On a small team, the people who build features also help keep them running. You will share responsibility for testing, monitoring, and the operational health of what we ship, and you will help us hold a high bar for correctness as the product grows.

Other Responsibilities

Lane is an early-stage company, and responsibilities shift as the business grows. You should expect to take on work that falls outside this list, and we welcome your ideas about what belongs on it.

What We're Looking For

  • Substantial experience building and shipping full-stack web applications, comfortably spanning both the front end and the back end.
  • Strong programming fundamentals and fluency in a modern stack; experience with TypeScript, JavaScript, or Python is helpful.
  • Experience designing and maintaining APIs that other people build on, with an eye for clarity and stability.
  • Working familiarity with cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS, and a willingness to operate what you build.
  • An interest in AI systems and agents, and comfort building software that works with them.
  • A track record of shipping, along with the judgment to make decisions and revisit them as you learn more.
  • Careful attention to correctness and to the details of a good user experience.
  • Clear written communication; you can explain what you found, what you decided, and what you would do next.
  • Experience with payments, financial technology, or commerce products is helpful but not required.
